The Hawai‘i International Film Festival is in high gear. There are still
plenty of ACM-related events to celebrate and enjoy, several right here on
campus:

Zhong Dafeng, Dean of the International School of the famed Beijing Film
Academy, will give an illustrated lecture on “Changes in the Notion of
Family in Chinese Films,” Tuesday at 5 pm in the Moore Hall Tokioka Room
(Room 319). Professor Zhong is part of a BFA delegation visiting UHM. His

HIFF @ ACM THURSDAY – ERIC BYLER AND 9500 LIBERTY
AHow do you break into the Indie film scene from Hawai‘i? Ask Eric Byler,
Moanalua grad who made the celebrated “Charlotte Sometimes,” “Americaneese,”
and “TRE,” films that explore Asian American and hapa culture. Eric will
speak to ACM students Thursday at 9 am in George 213. His latest film is a
documentary, “9500 Liberty,” examining the explosive issue of immigration
policy. It shows Tuesday at 6:30 pm, and Friday at 1:15 pm at HIFF, but we
have him Thursday to talk about his career.
STATE OF ALOHA SCREENS AGAIN THURSDAY
Accolades have already poured in for this important documentary – directed
by Asst. Prof. Anne Misawa and produced by ACM – that explores the historic
and contemporary impacts of Statehood on politics, society and culture in
Hawai‘i. Those who attended the premiere Sunday had a chance to hear a panel
packed with local legends discuss the continuing issues, and the importance
of the film to educate all of us in the state not only on what has gone
before us, but also on what we still have to face. It screens once more
Thursday at 2 pm at the Regal Dole Cannery Theatres.
FRIDAY IS ACM DAY – AND NIGHT
Spend Friday at Dole, and you’ll see the best of student films from Shanghai
University and ACM, including some we’ve made together:
* 1:30 pm – Five short films from our partners in the SMART (Student Media
Art) Exchange with Shanghai University. The filmmakers are here for the
festival, and also for an ACM/SMART Filmmaker’s Development Workshop, where
they will work with ACM students on the production of a film. The 1:30 pm
screening is free, but you still need a ticket – and they are going fast.
* 4:30 pm – Show your ticket stub from the Shanghai Shorts program and you
can join a reception for ACM and Shanghai filmmakers, ACM students, and HIFF
delegates and visiting filmmakers. Go to the 2nd floor of the Dole Theatres
to the HIFF Café, where you’ll find this congenial gathering.
* 7:45 pm – ACM NIGHT @ HIFF!!
ACM will premiere its first Hawaiian language and its first animation films:
“Live Tonight” by ‘Aina Paikai and “Lulu” by Brittany Itsuno. Five more ACM
short films are on the schedule, including one co-produced in China with
students from Shanghai University’s School of Film and Television. “Jinxian
Junction” is the second in a series of SMART Exchange productions,
co-directed by Kevyn Fong of ACM, and Pan Huijia of Shanghai University. “Li
Hing Mui, Lilikoi & Lychee,” by Lauren Cheape, was shot on Oahu with a mixed
ACM-Shanghai University crew, and is also part of the festival program.
Other films are “Watch Your Tongue” by Nasser Marghalani, “Dog & Cat” by
Robert Omura, and “Flowers, Chocolates and Candlelit Dinners” by Priscilla
Stafford, a winner of ACM’s Grace Abernethy Women’s Filmmaker Initiative
Award.
