August 20, 2009
Aloha students, friends and supporters of the Academy for Creative Media at
the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
WELCOME BACK!
We begin the Fall Semester with a lot of excitement. Our own BA (hooray)!
Our Statehood Documentary hitting the small and big screens. An
Orientation/Gathering of all our majors. A couple or three film festivals to
satisfy our cinematic cravings. And to ease your registration woes, there’s
still some room in a few ACM courses. Although Screenwriting is closed, you
can still register for ACM 355 – Oral Tradition to Screenplay – which will
satisfy your core writing requirement. Advanced students still looking for a
Critical Studies course can find a few seats in either ACM 460 – Media
Ethics, ACM 360 – Indigenous Aesthetics, or ACM 490 – Global Media.
ACM MAJORS: TIME TO MOVE OVER!
With the approval by the UH Board of Regents of the ACM BA degree, it’s time
for majors who are under Interdisciplinary Studies to choose whether they
want to stay where they are, or move over to the new ACM BA.
It requires filling out one simple form, found at <www.hawaii.edu/acm>.
Click where it says MAJORS under “Announcements.” The form explains both the
background for the change and the change process. Instead of a degree in
Interdisciplinary Studies, you will be completing a degree in Creative
Media. There will be no additional requirements if you make the switch now.
If you fill out and return the form, we will handle the switch for you. If
not, you will remain an IS major unless you go through the Colleges of Arts
and Sciences Declaration of Major process on your own.
The deadline for returning the form is September 18, 2009.
Newly accepted majors don’t have to fill out the switch form. Continue to
work with your ACM advisor on your academic plan. A new template to help you
formulate your academic plan can be found on the ACM website. Click on
“Application and Other Academic Forms” from the menu on the left, and then
“ACM Academic Planning/Advising Form.”
ORIENTATION FOR ALL MAJORS AND INTENDED MAJORS SEPT. 11
Oh, there are so many reasons for us to join together as the semester gets
underway. So we will, on Friday, September 11, at 2:30 pm in the
Architecture Auditorium. We’ll talk about our new BA program, and our moving
into the College of Arts and Humanities. We’ll tell you about the first in
what will become an annual ACM Awards Ceremony for student films, and about
our other award competitions for the year. You’ll meet the faculty and
staff, and watch some of our latest ACM films. Good talk. Good friends. Good
fun. See you there!
ACM’S ESSENTIAL “STATE OF ALOHA” DOC ON KHET THURSDAY
On this 50th anniversary of Hawai‘i Statehood, ACM has produced a
significant and essential documentary “State of Aloha,” directed by Asst.
Prof. Anne Misawa, which explores both the gains and losses for the state
and its people over the last half-century. It will be seen in a special
2-hour program Thursday, August 27, at 7:30 pm on KHET-TV. Dozens of ACM
students participated in the production of the hour-long documentary, which
will be accompanied by an extended “Insights” discussion. It will replay
Friday, August 28, at 10:30 pm. Not to be missed!
A feature-length version of “State of Aloha” will be screened at the Hawai‘i
International Film Festival, which will run from October 15-25 this year,
and also include ACM Night – a screening of ACM student films – and a
special showing of student films from our SMART Exchange partner Shanghai
University.
SPEAKING OF HIFF …. INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE!
There’s no better way to participate in the film festival world and to meet
filmmakers and key industry people than an internship with the Hawai‘i
International Film Festival. And you can get ACM 495 credit, too! HIFF is
seeking interns in Operations, Volunteer Coordination, Outreach &
Communications, Special Events & Seminars, and Travel & Hospitality. Send an
email to <intern@hiff.org> with your interest area (hint: tell them
“anything and everything!”), and they’ll get you started. If you’d like to
earn ACM credit, see your advisor.

should appeal to ACM students who want just a little more production under
their belts. Sign up for either or both at <www.outreach.hawaii.edu/pnm>.

preventing violence against girls and women.
ABERNETHY SCREENWRITER WINNERS GET $1,500!
Katelind Ikuma and Cameron Nitta earned $1,500 each to help produce their
Grace Abernethy Award winning screenplays. The award from the annual
competition is designed to help cover production costs to put winning
screenplays on the screen. The competition is made possible by the Grace
Abernethy Fund for Creative Writing through the Hawai‘i Community

winners.
