ACM Summer 2009 # 1
June 1, 2009

ACM BA APPROVED!!!!

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents approved ACM's proposal for its
own BA in Creative Media in a unanimous vote at its meeting in Hilo May 29.
The BOR approval culminated a 3-year quest. The proposal was reviewed and
approved by the UHM Colleges of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty Senate, the
Chancellor's Office, the System-wide Council of Chief Academic Officers, the
President's Office, and finally the BOR.

"This validates the solid and rigorous academic program ACM has developed,
reflected by the tremendous accomplishments and dedication of our students
and faculty," said ACM Chair Tom Brislin. "We have received unwavering
support from the Chancellor's Office, which we greatly appreciate. That
support has extended campus- system- and state-wide. Our own BA, where
students can specialize in Digital Cinema, Animation and Game Design, and
Critical Studies, launches us into ACM 2.0, where we can expand our campus
and international programs as well as our outreach into the community."

Current majors will be given instructions on what they need to do in order
to switch from Interdisciplinary Studies to the new ACM BA major. Students
whose applications have been accepted, but haven't met with IS, still need
to work out their academic plan with their ACM faculty advisors.

SEVEN ACM FILMS & FIVE FILMMAKERS HEAD TO SHANGHA

Seven student films from the UH M?noa Academy for Creative Media, including
two unique Hawai'i-China co-productions, have been selected for showing at
the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival June 13-21. Five ACM student
filmmakers will also travel to China for the festival and to create short
films on location with students from Shanghai University. This exclusive
U.S.-China student film co-production is part of the SMART (Student Media
Art) Exchange program, partnering the two universities with the Hawai'i
International Film Festival (HIFF) and the Shanghai International Film
Festival (SIFF).

"Better City, Better Life," which premiered at the 2008 Hawai'i festival,
blends three films shot on location in Shanghai. It will be joined at the
Shanghai festival by ACM student films "Kleptaholic" by Pablo Paz, "Watch
Your Tongue" by Nasser Marghalani, "The Last Delivery" by Robert Omura (who
also directed one of the "Better City, Better Life short films), "Li Hing
Mui, Lilikoi, and Lychee" by Lauren Cheape, and "Beauty Brawl" by Kevyn
Fong. "Beauty Brawl" was featured in the closing night films of the Rainbow
Film Festival. "Li Hing Mui, Lilikoi and Lychee" utilized an ACM-Shanghai
University crew as part of the SMART international co-productions.

The seventh film, "Rain," by Thomas Takemoto-Chock, will screen in the
prestigious International Student Short Film Competition. It also premiered
at HIFF 2008 and won the Best Hawaiian Short award at the Big Island Film
Festival.

Asst. Prof. Anne Misawa, who originated the SMART Exchange, will accompany
the students to Shanghai and supervise the U.S.-China student workshop and
film productions.

ABERNETHY SCREENWRITER WINNERS GET $1,500!

Felicita Garrido and Benjamin Liou earned $1,500 each to help produce their
Grace Abernethy Award winning screenplays. The award from the annual
competition is designed to help cover production costs to put winning
screenplays on the screen. The competition is made possible by the Grace
Abernethy Fund for Creative Writing through the Hawai'i Community
Foundation.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW ALUMNI

Congratulations to our Spring 09 Graduating Seniors. Please be sure to let
your ACM advisor know you're heading out for bigger and better things, and
how we can stay in touch with you as you wow the world with your talent! ACM
alums are a strong, growing group - and an important network for job
referrals.

And here's a note from ACM Alum Leah Dawson, "I have been working on a local
film this past year called SURF INTO YOGA featuring Pro Surfer Rochelle
Ballard," which had three premiere parties this month. Leah is a pro surfer
as well as an excellent filmmaker.

a rotating basis: Production Office, Art Department, Locations, Wardrobe and
the Assistant Directors Department.
Interested? Contact Assistant Professor Joel Moffett at <moffett@hawaii.edu>,
