‘TIS THE SEASON – FOR FILMS!
Aloha Students, Supporters and Friends of the Academy for Creative Media.
We’re entering that wonderful time of the year when the cinematic menu
overflows with rich and diverse offerings.
At the top of the list, of course, is the 2008 Louis Vuitton Hawai‘i
International Film Festival, October 9-19. And at the top of the HIFF list
is …
ACM NIGHT @ HIFF
* Tuesday Oct. 14, 6 pm at Regal Dole Cannery Theatres: A record 12 student
films will be shown this year, including a trio of films made by ACM and
Shanghai University students - the first U.S.-China student film
co-productions. The three were shot in Shanghai where six ACM students
attended and screened their films at the Shanghai Int’l Film Festival. Two
other films make up the Hawai‘i-China film collaboration, a narrative film
shot during last year’s HIFF when our Shanghai University friends visited
us, and a documentary about this unique international and intercultural
filmmaking venture.
Order your tickets NOW <www.hiff.org> for this always sold-out screening.
Seats are going FAST!
The ACM student films to be shown October 14 include:
* Goendama (Five Yen Coin) by Yayoi Ikezaki
* Rain by Thomas Takemoto-Chock
* Red Dirt by Monet Sadural

Film Office and the Hawai‘i State Legislature provided support for the
Hawai‘i-China Film Development Programs.
SHANGHAI SHORTS @ HIFF
* Tuesday, Oct. 14, 4 pm at Regal Dole Cannery Theatres: Preceding the ACM
films will be five films made by our student collaborators at Shanghai
University. This program is FREE(!) – but you must order a ticket
<www.hiff.org>. This is a great opportunity to see the themes, techniques,
and visual styles of Chinese student films. ACM students thinking about
submitting a film and traveling to the 2009 Shanghai International Film
Festival should be first in line for this experience to share filmmaking
insights across cultures.
ACM@HIFF AFTERPARTY
Join filmmaking friends from across the islands and oceans at a special
afterparty following the Tuesday night ACM film screenings at HIFF, and
enjoy the festival music video entries, too. It’s all happening at The Loft,
115 Hotel Street.
VIEWER’S CHOICE: VOTE FOR YOUR ACM@HIFF FAVORITE!
Six ACM@HIFF student films can also be viewed (for FREE!) on the Oceanic NGN
Video-On-Demand Channel 680. You can not only watch them, but also cast a
vote for your favorite. The winner gets the official HIFF Viewer’s Choice
Award. Dane Neves’ THE MONKEYBOY FEVER took last year’s honors. There are
three shorts by other filmmakers also on the menu. And you can preview
trailers for many of the HIFF films.

MY BEIJING BIRTHDAY DOC SCREENING MONDAY
MY BEIJING BIRTHDAY is a documentary by Howie Snyder who has lived in
Beijing off and on since 1981. Our friends at the Center for Chinese Studies
has brought him and his film to campus for a public talk on Monday (Oct. 13)
at noon in the Tokioka Room (Moore Hall 319), and a screening of his film at
4:30 pm at the Center for Korean Studies auditorium. The screening will be
followed by a Q&A session. The film follows a group of Chinese kids from
1996-2008 as they study stand-up comedy. It’s a warm insight into the coming
of age of a new Chinese generation.
