Record 12 ACM FILMS @ HIFF 2008
Aloha Students, Supporters and Friends of the Academy for Creative Media.
BIG news for ACM at next month's Hawaii International Film Festival - and
some wonderful guests from next week's Cinema Italiano in Hawaii Festival!
A record 12 student films from the University of Hawai‘i at ’s Academy for
Creative Media will be featured at the 2008 Louis Vuitton Hawai‘i
International Film Festival.
The program will include the first U.S.-China student film co-productions,
three films made by a collaboration of ACM students and students from
Shanghai University’s School of Film and Television Art & Technology. The
films were written, produced and directed by the international student teams
and shot on location in Shanghai in both Chinese and English.
The three short films follow the theme “Better City, Better Life,”
Shanghai’s motto for its 2010 World Expo. Some of the Shanghai University
filmmaking team will be present for the premier of the films.
A documentary on the unique international filmmaking effort, and a short
feature shot in Hawai’i by an earlier ACM-Shanghai University crew are also
part of the program.
The ACM films will be shown October 14 at 6 pm at the Regal Dole Cannery
Theatres. They will be preceded at 4 pm by a free screening of student films
from Shanghai University. ACM and Shanghai University participate in the
SMART (Student Media Art) Exchange, co-sponsored by the Hawai‘i and Shanghai
International Film Festivals.
“We are proud of the diverse stories – and the diversity of our student
story-tellers,” said ACM Chair and Professor Tom Brislin. “We are especially
proud that Hawai‘i students are leading the groundbreaking initiative of
international co-productions with China. The Hawai‘i International Film
Festival is the ideal place to give these films a world premier.”
The ACM student films to be shown October 14 include:
* Goendama (Five Yen Coin) by Yayoi Ikezaki
* Rain by Thomas Takemoto-Chock
* Red Dirt by Monet Sadural
* Just Like That by Nasser Marghalani

ACM STUDENTS WORK ON HIFF TRAILER

ACM DIRECTING STUDENTS IMPROVISE FILM
Fall started out with a bang as Assistant Professor Joel Moffett wrote and
directed an improvised short film and produced it in his ACM370 Directing
class during the first week of school. The project was used as a case study
to explore how to direct a short film using the same resources available to
all ACM students. The script, written by Moffett the day before the shoot,
gave a cast of 17 actors the opportunity to improvise most of the action and
dialogue of the story (WARNING: do not try this at home!). Congratulations
to the students of ACM370 for making this ambitious project a reality!
SCHOLARSHIPS $!
The Colleges of Arts & Sciences have a number of scholarship opportunities

POST YOUR CASTING CALL NOTICES ON ACM WEBSITE
Your film casting call can be posted on the ACM website. Send your flyer as
a jpg file to ACM Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius <ambrosiu@hawaii.edu> a
week before the call date, and it will go up for all to see.
Remember, no flyers should be posted on the glass on the front and back
entrance doors to Crawford Hall. They’ll be taken down, pronto.
PRE-MAJORS, TAKE NOTE!
The ACM Faculty has approved the following policy:
Students who desire to become an ACM major but receive less than a grade of
“B” (3.0) in ACM 255 may retake the course once for reconsideration. If a
grade of B is not attained in the retaking of the course, the student is
ineligible to become an ACM major. Any appeals to this policy will be heard,
and decided, by a faculty committee.
And remember, you’re not a major until you have completed your Academic
Proposal and have it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary
Studies Advisor. While some students have applied to ACM and their
application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the next step of
preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and then having it
approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty registering for courses
that are restricted to majors, as they won’t have been officially declared,
or recognized, as ACM majors.
