ACM Update #5 SPRING 2008
March 12, 2008

Congrats to a pair of ACM students, and special screenings, events for all.

TWO ACM STUDENT FILMS IN RIVERSIDE INT'L FILM FESTIVAL

Two student films from UH Manoa's Academy for Creative Media have been selected for screening at the Riverside (CA) International Film Festival, April 11-20. "Atonement" by Seong Kyu Whang and "My Brother's Keeper" by Russell Blanchard will join films from the U.S., Spain, Lebanon, Australia, and the Philippines. Both films were featured in the 2007 Hawai'i International Film Festival as well.

"ACM has enjoyed a solid relationship with the Riverside Festival, now 6 years old," said Tom Brislin, ACM chair. "They are very discriminating and accept only the top student films. This is the second year our students have received this honor." Brislin noted that the festival programmers enjoy the unique perspective on local life that ACM student films present, stripped away of stereotypes and tropical clichés.

Both films explore darker themes - poverty, crime, and addiction - that are balanced by redemption through character relationships. "These are dynamic stories," Brislin said. "The festival made an excellent choice."

SPECIAL SESSION #1: ASIAN/AMERICAN WOMEN ON SCREEN

Join ACM Asst. Prof. Konrad Ng for a dialogue with Celine Parrenas Shimizu on "The Hypersexuality of Race: Performing Asian/American Women on Screen and Scene," next Wednesday (March 19) in Moore Hall 319 - The Tokioka Room - at 2:30 p.m. It's jointly sponsored by American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Philippine Studies and ACM.

SPECIAL SESSION #2: GETTING PERMITS FOR YOUR FILM

Kevin Inouye of the Hawai'i State Film Office (and former ACM filmmaker!) will talk to ACM students on the process of obtaining permits for shooting locations on Tuesday (March 18) at 6 pm in Crawford 115. It's part of the ACM 415 Advanced Cinematic Production class. All students are invited.

Students who desire to become an ACM major but receive less than a grade of "B" (3.0) in ACM 255 may retake the course once for reconsideration. If a grade of B is not attained in the retaking of the course, the student is ineligible to become an ACM major. Any appeals to this policy will be heard, and decided, by a faculty committee.
