ACM Update #2 SPRING 2008
February 19, 2008

Aloha ACM students, supporters and friends. In this e-newsletter, top flight animation speakers at KCC, and ACM finds itself in a tug-of-war between the Legislature and UH.

ATTENTION ANIMATORS & DESIGNERS

Our friends and colleagues at Kapiolani Community College's New Media Arts are featuring two outstanding speakers in programs open to all:

* Wednesday Feb. 20, 7-9 pm - "Finding Faces: Character Design in Feature Animation," featuring Carter Goodrich, winner of the Annie Award for Character Design for RATATOUILLE. Goodrich's film work includes MONSTERS, INC., FINDING NEMO, and SHREK. He has also created covers for New Yorker and illustrated several books. The lecture is in Ohia 118 (below the Cafeteria and next to the bookstore).

* Tuesday Feb. 26 - Two presentations by John Edgar Park, lead Character Technical Director at Walt Disney Animation Studios. From 2-4 pm he'll cover the planning and creation of animated character rigs for Disney's MEET THE ROBINSONS, including skeletons, deformers, scripts and animation interfaces. It's a presentation titled "Carl the Robot, Doris the Bowler Hat, and a Boy Named Wilbur: Character Rigging for Feature Animation." From 7-9 pm his talk will be "From Concept to Render: the Creation of a Feature Animation Character." Both sessions will be in KOA 102 on the KCC campus. For information, contact Sharon Sussman ssussman@hawaii.edu.

STATE SENATE IN TUG-OF-WAR WITH UH OVER ACM

All of us were caught by surprise by the introduction of a Senate bill (SB3168) in the state Legislature calling for the removal of ACM from Manoa and placing it at the University of Hawaii at West Oahu. The current version of the bill specifies that the recently appropriated funds to house and equip ACM would not "be expended unless the ACM is permanently established at and administered by the University of Hawaii at West Oahu."

The ACM and UH System administration opposes the bill, as noted in a recent Ka Leo story:

Many ACM students are expressing great concerns, shared by the faculty

UHM Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw is a strong supporter of ACM and invites all members of the campus and ACM community to express their opinions. You can contact her at vhinshaw@hawaii.edu. Here are her recent comments to the ACM faculty:

"Aloha! I appreciate encouraging everyone to voice their opinions on this issue because universities are great places to debate varying views - that is very helpful and highly characteristic of our academic community.

Our goal is to have a great ACM program here that will serve students throughout our state and lead to excellent jobs here in Hawai'i - that is definitely a way in which Mania contributes to the development of educated citizens and builds economic vitality for Hawai'i.

Many academic programs at UH Manoa are engaged with ACM and the integration of ACM into these many programs is critical to the effectiveness of this educational opportunity for students - and I have great respect for that integration. I have opposed this bill for a number of reasons, but, primarily, because I strongly believe ACM and the students will be best served by being connected to the breadth of academic programs available here at UH Manoa. I do hope people appreciate the fact that this should not be viewed as a source of contention between Manoa and West Oahu - it is important that West Oahu succeed in its endeavors.

Encouraging creativity is a wonderful feature of our university, so I have a high level of enthusiasm for ACM's contributions. Mahalo for encouraging active, respectful discussions of such issues - Virginia"

NOTE TO MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL...

Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won't have been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising done pronto. For new applicants to the major - the same advice for you: You are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
