Aloha to students, friends and supporters of the Academy for Creative Media.
Here is our first E-newsletter for the semester. Another exciting term kicks
off with two stellar international filmmakers presenting ACM Master Classes.
ALOHA AND WELCOME (BACK)
We start a new semester and a new year with more ACM energy and excitement.
As of the first day of classes, we have a total enrollment of 283 in 15
courses, internships and independent studies. Still looking to add an ACM
course? There are some seats open in ACM 355 - Oral Tradition to Screenplay
(satisfies the screenwriting requirement for ALL ACM majors); ACM 385 - our
Master Class (satisfies a Critical Studies requirement and may be taken
twice); ACM 455 - Indigenous Filmmaking; and ACM 480 - Oceanic Media and
Culture.
MASTER CLASS KICKS OFF WITH TWO INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKERS
ACM's Master Class presentations (part of ACM 385) are open to all students.
It's your chance to interact with and learn from some of the top filmmakers
locally, nationally and internationally. We're fortunate to start this
semester with two world-famous filmmakers, Lech Majewski and Alanis
Obomsawin. Each session begins at 4 pm in Crawford 115:
* Friday (January 18): The talented Lech Majewski is a poet, filmmaker and
video artist. He has written, directed and produced films, novels and
theatrical productions including the visionary film, GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
HARRY (1992), starring Viggo Mortensen and BASQUIAT (1995), a film based on
the story of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, starring Jeffrey Wright, Benicio
del Torro, Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman, Tatum O'Neal, Courtney Love, Dennis
Hopper, and David Bowie as Andy Warhol. In 2007, he premiered his video art
piece, BLOOD OF A POET at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and is the
subject of a traveling retrospective that has appeared at the Art Institute
of Chicago, Portland Art Museum, Cleveland Institute of Art, Berkeley Art
Museum, The National Gallery in Washington DC, and now Honolulu (see below).
* Next Friday (January 25): Alanis Obomsawin (Abenaki, Canada) is a
critically acclaimed First
Nations singer, writer, storyteller and documentarian seeking through her
performances in North America and Europe to make known the history, culture,
and aspirations of her people. Obomsawin has received a dozen awards and
honors over the years, including the Order of Canada, the federal
government's highest honor, in 1983. Her films have picked up more than 30
awards at international festivals. As a mark of affection, her people call
her Ko-li-la-wato (someone who makes us very happy).
MAJEWSKI FILMS AT DORIS DUKE THEATRE
The Honolulu Academy of Art's Doris Duke Theatre is hosting the Lech
Majewski film retrospective this week. You have the opportunity to see his
films before meeting him in Friday's Master Class:
* Tonight (Tuesday), 7 pm: WOJACZEK, a portrait of the last days of Rafal
Wojaczek, a rebellious poet whose poetry made a lasting impression on
generations of Poles.
* Wednesday, 1 pm and 7 pm: THE ROE'S ROOM, an autobiographical film opera
about a young poet who lives with his parents in an apartment that is being
slowly devoured by nature.
* Thursday, 1 pm: THE KNIGHT. A young knight goes in search of a
gold-stringed harp that brings peace and harmony. The film's imagery is
inspired by medieval icons.
* Thursday, 7 pm: GOSPEL ACCORDING TO HARRY, a maverick allegory that takes
place when the Pacific has dried up and California has become a desert.
ALANIS OBOMSAWIN PRESENTS PACIFIC NEW MEDIA PROGRAMS
In addition to her talk to ACM students in our Master Class January 25,
Canadian documentarian Alanis Obomsawin will also participate in these
Pacific New Media offerings:
* Waban-Aki: People from Where the Sun Rises, a free talk (following the
Jan. 25 Master Class) from 7-9 pm in the Yukiyoshi Room (Krauss Hall 012).
* Mastering Sound in Film, an all-day workshop Saturday January 26. Fee:
$100. Register through Pacific New Media .
Class code is L09512.
* Directing the Documentary, an all-day workshop Sunday January 27. Fee
$100. Course code is L09521.
Both workshops are co-sponsored by Pacific Islanders in Communication.
ACM AT THE SUGAR BOWL
No, we weren't on the field. But we did get mention in the official Allstate
Sugar Bowl program book. In the UH entry titled Academic Excellence: "The
variety of undergraduate degree programs offered at the University continues
to expand and even allows for students to create their own specialized
program. UH Manoa recently added yet another degree program into its
curriculum, when the Hawaii State Legislature approved funding for a film
school, the Academy for Creative Media, the first of its kind in the state."
Now if we only could have provided pass protection . . . .

REMINDER TO MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL...
Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have
it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor
before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to
ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the
next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and
then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty
registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won't have
been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising
done pronto. For new applicants to the major - the same advice for you: You
are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your
ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
