ACM JOINS HOLLYWOOD IN SEARCH FOR KUNG FU ACTOR

ACM's Master Class (ACM 385) will be the scene Nov. 30 for auditions for a lead actor in Legendary Pictures (SUPERMAN RETURNS, 300) feature film based on the popular 1970's television series KUNG FU. ACM Director Chris Lee will oversee an Open Call to cast the lead character, Caine. In the film, Caine is male, around 30 years old, with a Chinese mother and American Father. The story takes place in the American Old West during the 1800's and is a Martial Arts Western. A martial arts background is not strictly necessary, but the ideal candidate for the role is physically fit with some athletic training, preferably in martial arts, gymnastics or dance.

ACM is inviting male actors of Asian or hapa (mixed Asian) descent between the ages of mid-20's to mid 30's for the 4 p.m. tryout in Crawford Hall 115.

For the Open Call:

* Please prepare a one-minute monologue of your choosing, delivered in English.
* Please prepare a one-minute demonstration of your martial arts or athletic ability - You will be timed and stopped at the end of one minute!
* Please bring your headshot/resume as well as CLEARLY LABELED demo reels or publicity materials that will help us get to know you and your talents better - unfortunately, original materials CANNOT BE RETURNED.
* Please be prepared to wait - possibly all session.
* Candidates clearly not right for the role will not be read.
* Call-backs will take place on the same day, at the end of the session.

$1250 SCREENWRITING AWARD FOR GLBT FILMMAKER INITIATIVE

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, & Transgender Filmmaker Initiative provides essential funding for the production of narrative or documentary media projects that focus on issues involving gay, lesbian, bisexual and or transgender subject matter. The initiative facilitates the creation of films that focus on positive portrayals of queer life in Hawaii. We hope that these films will not only foster a more tolerant perspective of alternative lifestyles in the islands but will also nourish local queer voices within our young filmmaking community.

NOTE: You do not have to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender to win this award.

Two $1,250 awards are available. Please submit the following to the ACM office, Crawford 210, by 4pm on Monday, Jan. 14 2008:

* A signed letter of introduction, which includes a statement of intent, if chosen as a winner, to produce this film in the spring of 2008 as an ACM 499 Directed Study.
* A completed screenplay.
* A one-paragraph synopsis of the story.
* A preliminary budget indicating all costs of production and post-production

Who's eligible:
* Students enrolled in ACM courses.
* You must be a continuing student - you'll be enrolling full-time for Fall 2007.
* You must have an overall grade point average of 2.75.

NOTE: Winning students are required to produce their films as part of an ACM 499 Directed Study. All winners must agree to provide the Academy for Creative Media a production journal outlining pre-production, shooting and post production schedules, as well as any rough, director's and/or final cuts of the production, which shall be copyrighted as an ACM Production.

For information, contact Asst. Prof. Joel Moffett at 956-3353, or moffett@hawaii.edu. This Screenwriting Competition is made possible by a grant from the University of Hawai'i at Office of Student Equity Excellence and Diversity (SEED).

NOTE TO MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL...

Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won't have been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising done pronto. For new applicants to the major - the same advice for you: You are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
