ACM Update #4 FALL 2007
October 25, 2007

Aloha students and supporters of the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In this e-newsletter, an ACM win at HIFF and a special Intellectual Property Law Seminar.

ACM'S DANE NEVES WINS BIG @ HIFF 2007

ACM student filmmaker Dane Neves took the Oceanic Time Warner VOD Viewer's Choice Award for "THE MONKEYBOY FEVER" in this year's Hawai'i International Film Festival competition. Dane takes away a cool $1,000 for his win. The film was featured among a dozen Hawai'i-made short films, including all eight ACM student films in the festival, that were available for viewing on Oceanic's digital channel 680. Viewers could then electronically cast their ballots with their remotes on channel 681.

Dane's win highlights the success of ACM at the 2007 festival, including our SRO ACM @ HIFF screening Sunday night; the screening of our partner Shanghai University films Sunday afternoon, and our outstanding Master Class on Asian American cinema with director Justin Lin and actor Roger Fan on Monday.

STILL ON SCREEN AT HIFF

There's still a chance to see some fine ACM-related films at the festival:
* Tonight at 9:15, ONE FOOT OFF THE GROUND, executive produced and edited by ACM director Chris Lee for Chen Daming.
* Saturday at 5:45 pm, HORSEPOWER, a film by ACM Asst Prof Joel Moffet, part of the "Shorts #3" package.
* Sunday at 7 pm, ALL FOR MELISSA - ACM Asst Prof Anne Misawa was director of photography for this Gerard Elmore feature.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW, FINANCING AND YOU

It's short notice, but there's a great opportunity to take part tomorrow (yes, TOMORROW - FRIDAY 10/26) in an Entertainment Law Seminar from 2-5 pm at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Honolulu Suite. It's only $25 (for non-lawyers), and that includes an 11: 30 am lunch! It's a program of the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Section of the Hawai'i State Bar Association.

The seminar speakers will address important issues of new distribution channels for local productions (Edgy Lee), how to clear content and protect IP rights (Martin Hsia), issues in commercializing cultural arts (Mark Bernstein), balancing commercialization of native arts with cultural sensitivity (Maile Meyer), new financing alternatives for local film productions (Jason Lau), and tax incentives for funding digital media and entertainment productions (Bill Meyer).

WORTH CHECKING OUT

* If you can't make tomorrow's seminar, all ACM students are welcome to a special session on Intellectual Property Law, 3:25 - 4:40 pm Nov. 2 in Classroom 1 of the UHM Law School. Sayoko Blodgett-Ford, IP expert, and a guest attorney will discuss IP issues in motion picture deals.

GIRL FEST FILM FESTIVAL NOV 15-18

GIRL FEST Film Festival will screen some of the best new international and independent releases that offer a positive representation of women in film. Highlights of the festival include winner of best screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival, "Stephanie Daley," starring Tilda Swinton; "A Ripple in the Water: Healing through Art," a film exploring the work of South African artist/activist Kim Berman; "Heart of a Soul Surfer," a personal documentary about Kauai surfer Bethany Hamilton, and a fascinating array of short films made by new directors, as well as Hawaiian public high school students. All screenings at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, November 15-18. Film screenings begin at 1:00 p.m. Check www.girlfesthawaii.org for all film listings and times.

NOTE TO MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL...

Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won't have been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising done pronto. For new applicants to the major - the same advice for you: You are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
