ACM Update #8 SPRING 2007
May 4, 2007

ACM STUDENT AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS

Congratulations to winning ACM students in the Grace Abernathy Screenwriting and Women's Filmmaker Initiative competitions, and to those who have earned ACM scholarships and awards:

ACM/Grace Abernathy Screenplay Competition winners are Joshua Abel for his screenplay "Drag On" and Andrew Snyder for "Skin Therapy." Each will receive $1250 to help underwrite production costs of filming their screenplays.

Also winning a $1250 production award from the ACM/Grace Abernathy Women's Filmmaker Initiative is Suzan Ven Tapp for her screenplay "Pious Child."

Isaac Warsh and Eric Manke, each were awarded $2,000 from the Hawai'i Association of Broadcasters Scholarship Fund. (Other HAB Scholarships are still available, see note below. Apply online at www.hawaiibroadcasters.com).

Anthony Pacheco, Ryan McKinley and Dane Neves received special Student Achievement Awards of more than $1,000 to help defray tuition costs.

ACM STUDENT FILMS AT FESTIVALS ACROSS THE MAINLAND

THE VC (Visual Communication) FilmFest, ongoing in Los Angeles - one of the largest festivals featuring Asian American filmmakers and films, features ACM student films CHOPSTICKS by Henry Mochida; DAO by Jay Hubert; and FOLLOW THE LEADER by Ty Sanga. The festival also features a unique discussion between directors Wayne Wang and Justin Lin - an ACM Master Class presenter, and both featured directors at the Hawai'i International Film Festival.

FOLLOW THE LEADER will also screen at Pacifika May 10-12 in Washington, D.C., and at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York.

And a special standing ovation for Jay Hubert's DAO, which took the grand prize for a College Level Student Production at WorldFest, Houston's annual international film festival. Houston discovered what we've always known - the tremendous talents of filmmakers, casts and crews at ACM and in Hawai'i.

LEGISLATURE MAKES MAJOR APPROPRIATION FOR ACM

A special thanks to all students, faculty, and community & industry supporters who urged our state legislators to support ACM. The House and Senate unanimously passed a measure that will give almost $5 million for an ACM facility and equipment. Next steps are for the governor to sign the measure into law, and for the university and Hawai'i Public TV to agree on a lease that would provide a long-term home for ACM in the KHET-TV building on the corner of University and Dole. Stay tuned!

FINAL "MOVIE NIGHT" TONIGHT

ACM students Mark Wolf, Dane Neves and Charles Toratani invite all to the final MOVIE NIGHT tonight in Law School Classroom #2, featuring ACM student films, food & fellowship. It runs from 6-10 pm.

LOST INTERNSHIPS RENEWED FOR FALL

Producers of the ABC made-in-Hawai'i hit show LOST have enjoyed our ACM interns so much they want to renew internship program for Fall. Three credits of ACM 495 are available. Students must be willing to work one LONG day each week in various production capacities. For information and instructor permission, contact Asst. Prof. Joel Moffett at 956-3353 or moffett@hawaii.edu.

Summer Internship Opportunities Still Available:

WE'VE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH, a documentary on African Americans in Hawai'i is seeking interns now for archival research and clearances, and PA positions over the summer when production resumes. ACM 495 Internship credit is available for working on this film, by Miles Jackson and Steve Okino. For information, contact Miles Jackson at 239-8943 or jackson@hawaii.edu. Have a resume ready.

Hawaiian Airlines is starting a streaming video channel on their website for employees. They'd like to have ACM students produce short documentary pieces on various employees, departments, etc. Sort of a "day in the life" kind of approach. ACM 495 Internship credit is available for working on this project, or ACM 499 Directed Study credit. Contact ACM Chairman Tom Brislin if you're interested.

MASTER CLASS COURSE FOR FALL 2007

Still seats available in our new and special class - HIGHLY recommended for all majors and intended majors- is our "Topics" course (ACM 385) that will take the form of a semester-long MASTER CLASS. Asst. Prof. Konrad Ng will put together a series of guest presentations by major filmmakers and film screenings/discussions every Friday from 2:30-5:20. You know the high quality of ACM Master Class offerings, which have included such luminaries as Cameron Crowe, Justin Lin, Bryan Singer, Kal Penn, and (April 20) Roy Disney. Now you can enjoy them and get 3 credits, too.
