ACM Update #1 SPRING 2007
January 26, 2007

Aloha all students, faculty and friends of the Academy for Creative Media. Spring Semester is well underway, and so are ACM's Programs and Initiatives. We're serving 175 students (filling 270 seats!) across 20 ACM courses.

All Spring 2007 enrolled students will receive this series of email newsletters. Fall 2006 students will, too. Even though you may not be taking any courses with us this semester, we hope we'll see you signing up with us again.

ACM INTERNSHIPS ON LOST

ACM and the producers of ABC-TV's LOST are partnering in an internship program that has placed 10 ACM majors in positions on the production staff of the hit series. Asst. Prof. Joel Moffett organized and supervises the program. ACM majors include Joelle-Lyn Sarte, Andrew Snyder, Eric Manke, Mark Wolf, Julian Gilliam, Russell Blanchard, Isaac Warsh, Daryl Gilmore, Ryan McKinley and Roger Nakamine.

WOMEN'S FILMMAKER INITIATIVE

Congratulations to Joelle-Lyn Sarte and Randee Chang, winners of ACM's Women's Filmmaker Initiative. Each submitted a winning film proposal and will receive $1250 to produce them. The program is coordinated by Asst. Prof. Joel Moffett and co-sponsored with a grant from the University's Diversity and Equity Initiative. Look forward to the annual ACM Screenwriting Competition later this semester, where you can win $1,000 to produce your film.

ACM SCORES AT UH DAY AT THE CAPITOL

ACM had an outstanding display of student films and program accomplishments at the official UH Day at the Capitol last week. State Senators and House Representatives and their staffs had a chance to chat with ACM students and faculty, watch student films and a preview of our STATEHOOD documentary, see displays of student writing and projects, and munch on popcorn. Many said it was the best turnout of faculty, students and fun.

ACM Director Chris Lee headlined testimony for an informational hearing on developing Hawai'i's film and digital media industries, and ACM's growth and significant role, before a joint Senate-House committee. UH leaders Chancellor Denise Konan and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Neal Smatresk were among the many government and industry representatives at the hearing. Chris Lee and ACM Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius showed a trailer reel of ACM student films, animation shorts, and clips from the upcoming STATEHOOD documentary. The student work received a sustained round of applause.
