ACM Update #9 FALL 2006
December 5, 2006

FALL '06 WINDS UP ON HIGH NOTE

Congratulations to all for a successful Fall Semester, marked by our outstanding ACM student films in the Hawai'i International Film Festival; Master Classes with Bryan Singer, Jon Peters, Cameron Crowe, Justin Lin, and Kal Penn; international partnerships with the Korean Film Council and Shanghai University; the unveiling of our Animation RenderFarm, which will "seed" digital media programs across the state; the expansion of our ACM faculty with the addition of Asst. Prof. Linda Dorn and Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius; and new curriculum in documentary production and cinematography.

WELCOME ASST. PROF. KONRAD NG

Spring 07 brings another addition to the ACM family: Dr. Konrad Ng who joins us as an assistant professor to help develop and coordinate our Critical Studies curriculum. Konrad wrapped up his PhD with the Political Science Department in November. He has previously taught our introductory course and several ACM seminars while curating the film program at the Honolulu Academy of Art's Doris Duke Theatre.

WOMEN'S FILMMAKER INTIATIVE: A SPECIAL SCREENWRITING CONTEST

The ACM's Woman's Filmmaker Initiative is an exciting new screenwriting competition designed to provide essential funding for the production of two narrative or documentary projects created by women from traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups (i.e. Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Melanesian, Pacific Islander, Puerto Rican, Samoan, Fijian, Micronesian, Asian, Asian American, African, African American, Hispanic). Winners will be awarded a $1,250 grant to students to produce their winning screenplays during the Spring 07 semester.

HOW TO APPLY: Submit the following to the ACM office, Crawford 210, by noon on Friday, January 12, 2007:
  • A preliminary budget indicating all costs of production and postproduction
  • A one-paragraph synopsis of the story
  • A final draft of your screenplay

    WHO'S ELIGIBLE:
  • Female students of color enrolled in ACM courses.
  • You must be a continuing student - you'll be enrolling full-time for Spring 2007.
  • You must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75.

NOTE: Winning students must agree to provide the Academy for Creative Media a production journal outlining pre-production, shooting and post production schedules, as well as any rough, director's and/or final cuts of the production, which shall be copyrighted as an ACM Production.

The competition is supported by a grant from the Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity. For more information, contact Asst. Prof. Joel Moffett at 956-3353, or moffett@hawaii.edu.

REMINDER FOR SPRING 07 ACM COURSES

    1. Students wishing to enroll in ACM 310 - Cinematic Narrative Production - must complete a workshop on camera and editing fundamentals. The all-day workshop will be offered Jan. 6 - the Saturday before the start of classes - through Pacific New Media. Register through Outreach College (956-8400) for Workshop # L08956. There is a $100 fee.

    2. ACM advanced courses in production are limited to majors. Want to become a major (or double-major)? See the ACM website.

    INTERNSHIPS FOR SPRING 07

Your ACM faculty is ironing out details for several professional internship possibilities for Spring Semester. We'll post the opportunities by email as they arise.

One available now is working with Making Waves Films on a documentary about the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, the first woman of color in Congress and driving force behind Title IX, the landmark legislation that mandated gender equity in education. These Production Internships can qualify for 3 credits of ACM 485. For information, contact Robin Lung, Associate Producer, at robinlung@hawaii.rr.com.

SPECIAL TV WRITING WORKSHOP FOR ACM CREDIT

ACM Students can earn 1 credit of ACM 390 (Workshops) next semester by attending a 2-day Pacific New Media Workshop: Writing for Television: Get Started and Go, April 28 & 29 (9 am-4 pm, Saturday and Sunday). Described by instructor Marie Jacquemetton: For everyone interested in writing for television, this two day intensive workshop gives an overview of writing on a television staff and provides students with an in-depth examination of writing an episode for a one hour or half-hour television series. Writers participate in a pitch workshop and receive specific feedback on their ideas the first day. Day two is a comprehensive discussion and illustration of the story break process. The goal is for attendees to leave with a solid pitch for a viable TV series spec episode and clear direction in how to structure, outline and write the teleplay. For information, see Pacific New Media's website. The workshop is included in the Spring 07 Extension schedule on MyUH. The CRN is 3699.

ART DEPT COURSE MAKES FINE ACM ELECTIVE

Prof. John Szostak invites ACM students to enroll in his Spring 2007 course: Genres of Japanese Film (ART 496). It will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4:15, with required weekly film viewings on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

From Prof. Szostak's description: This course examines genres of Japanese cinema from its early silent days to its recent reemergence on the international cinema scene. We will explore how the visual language of film can be studied to gain critical insight into the conventions and cultural mores of 20th - 21st century Japanese society. As an Oral focus course, there will be heavy emphasis on oral presentations before the class. Furthermore, registration is restricted to students able to attend our weekly Wednesday evening film screenings in the Art Auditorium.

    NETPAC SEEKS VOLUNTEER

The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema, headed by ACM friend Jeannette Paulson Hereniko, is looking for a volunteer with some web and graphics talent to help produce its newsletter. It's a great chance to get involved with an international film interest group that sponsors major awards at film festivals (including HIFF). Contact Jeannette at jphmovies@gmail.com.

    ON THE WEB

There's more than YouTube for filmmakers on the web. Check out www.documinutery.com for documentary filmmakers. For film festival information, try filmfestivalworld.com. An online filmmaking contest is described at filmaka.com.

    AT THE LIBRARY

STOLEN SUMMER, the film created through the Project Greenlight (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, etc.) program, and a behind-the-scenes look at its development and production is available at the Wong A/V Center at Sinclair Library. DVD 3746. Check it out.
