Aloha students and friends of the Academy for Creative Media. In this
update: ACM scores at HIFF; Your change to talk with Cameron Crowe; and the
Hawaiinuiakea Film Festival.
DAO GETS HAWAI'I INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL MENTION
ACM scored big in the 2006 Louis Vuitton Hawai'i International Film
Festival. DAO, an ACM student film by Jay Hubert was given a special mention
in the Hawai'i Filmmakers competition.
DAO was featured in a sold-out SRO HIFF screening along with ACM student
films SORE SHOULDERS AND ACHING JAWS by Roger Nakamine; EVE by Brian
Makanoa; MY FATHER'S STORY by Joelle-Lyn Satre; FOLLOW THE LEADER by Ty
Sanga and CHOPSTICKS by Henry Mochida.
Students also crowded into ACM Master Classes on Acting with Kal Penn, and
on Directing with Justin Lin, both held on campus as part of the ACM-HIFF
partnership. The first international student films at HIFF were co-sponsored
by ACM in our ongoing SMART (Student Media Art) Exchange. The Shanghai
University student filmmakers and faculty were guests of ACM and were
presented certificates at the Justin Lin Master Class.
CAMERON CROWE MASTER CLASS - SIGN UP NOW!
ACM and the Directors Guild of America present a videoconference with writer
/ director Cameron Crowe Wednesday (Nov. 1) from 1:30-3:30 pm in Kuykendall
201. Crowe is the writer of FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH and writer/director
of JERRY MAGUIRE, VANILLA SKY and ELIZABETHTOWN.
Director Randal Kleiser will moderate the discussion with Cameron Crowe from
Los Angeles. ACM Director Chris Lee and Assistant Professor Joel Moffett
will moderate from Manoa. This will be the first of many videoconferences
between the ACM and notable filmmakers from Hollywood and around the world!

CONVERSATION WITH DIRECTOR ERIC BYLER
Another opportunity to join in a conversation with a film director - the
Hawai'i Film Office presents Eric Byler, the provocative, award-winning,
independent-spirited hapa writer-director of "Charlotte Sometimes" and
"AMERICANese," - screened at this year's HIFF - moderated by the Hawaii Film
Office's Mynette Louie. The program takes place at noon Monday (Oct. 30) in
the Hawai'i State Art Museum Multi-Purpose Room, 1st floor, on the corner of
Hotel and Richards Street.

In conjunction with HIFF, and co-sponsored by ACM, the Hawaiinuiakea Film

FESTIVALS SEEKING ENTRIES
The Tribeca Film Institute invites filmmakers and screenwriters who identify
as African American, Asian American, Latino/a, Pacific Islander or Native
American to submit scripts and documentary proposals for consideration for
its programs. Deadline is December 15. See website for complete details.
