Aloha, students and friends of the Academy for Creative Media. BIG news, BIG opportunities for our students in the upcoming weeks:

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO MEET FILM DIRECTOR JUSTIN LIN

Justin Lin, director of FAST AND FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT, BETTER LUCK TOMORROW and ANNAPOLIS, will conduct an ACM Master Class on directing October 26, 2006 after meeting with students during a special luncheon in the Campus Center Executive Ballroom. The event will run from noon - 2 p.m.

Seating will be limited. Priority will be given to ACM majors, followed by other students enrolled in 300 and 400 level production courses on a space available basis.

ACM majors and students in 300 and 400 ACM production classes can RSVP to Lily Ching, 956-7736 from now to Friday (October 13). When you call, please leave your name and the course(s) in which you are enrolled.

If any seats remain after Friday, students in other ACM classes will be invited to fill them. So stay tuned.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Lunch is free, but if your RSVP is accepted, but you don't attend, you will be responsible for the $15 lunch fee.

ACM @ HIFF

The Justin Lin Master Class is one of several ACM events coordinated with the 2006 Hawai'i International Film Festival, which include:

!KUMAR COMES TO ACM!

That's right. Kal Penn, who played Kumar in HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE comes to ACM Wednesday, October 25. A free screening of HAROLD AND KUMAR will be held at 3 pm in the Architecture Auditorium, followed by a conversation with Kal Penn as an ACM Master Class on acting. All students are welcome, so show up early. Kal Penn was featured in SUPERMAN RETURNS, A LOT LIKE LOVE, and will star in the upcoming THE NAMESAKE and VAN WILDER 2: The Rise of Taj. He will serve as a juror for the 2006 HIFF

ACM is cosponsoring a screening at 6:30 pm Monday, October 23 - also at the Dole Cannery Theatres - of shorts made by film students from Shanghai University, part of the Student Media Art (SMART) Exchange Program between ACM, Shanghai University and the Hawai'i and Shanghai International Film Festivals. Show your support for this unique international program, which also sends ACM student filmmakers to Shanghai.

STAY TUNED

As the festival approaches - it runs from Oct. 19-29 on Oahu - ACM is working closely with HIFF on other possible programs to directly link filmmakers and students. We'll let you know as they happen. In the meantime, check out the full festival listing at www.hiff.org. There's no better opportunity to see the best in Asian, U.S. and European films.

ACM ALL OVER THE NEWS

It was difficult to go through the weekend without running into a story on ACM in the news. Our new Animation RenderFarm was unveiled Friday, with stories on the 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm newscasts across the dial. Gary C.W. Chun did a fantastic story for the Sunday Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Read it here. MidWeek was there, too, for the event that included UH President David McClain, Board of Regents Chair Kitty Lagareta, Chancellor Denise Konan, West Oahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni, LCC Chancellor Peter Quigley, UH VP for Community Colleges John Morton, UHM Director of Undergraduate Education Ron Cambra, faculty and students from UHM, LCC, KCC, MCC, HCC, and Oahu public schools.

And on Sunday night, ACM Director Chris Lee was the featured guest on LIVING LOCAL WITH THE BARAQUIOS on OC-16, discussing the phenomenal growth and accomplishments of ACM, including our student internships on SUPERMAN RETURNS, for which he was executive producer. ACM students Joelle-Lyn Satre and Alana Hong serve as PA's on the popular local show.
