ACM Update #1 FALL 2006
August 14, 2006

Aloha to all returning ACM students and other friends of the program. As you lock and load for Fall 2006, here are a few things to keep in mind.

GOOD SEATS, GOOD CLASSES

Seats are still available in several of our prime Critical Studies courses. Combine your love of cinema with a course that will count toward an ACM major, or as an upper-division elective for other students:

INFLUENTIAL DIRECTORS - Wednesday, 9:30 am - 12:20 pm. Spend your midweek morning with Woody Allen - or watching him, at least, along with the works of other filmmakers who have refined and redefined the language of film. Instructor Konrad Ng will introduce you to the auteurs who have put their personal signature on cinema.

MELODRAMA IN ASIAN CINEMA - Friday, 1:30 - 4:20 pm. Prof. Wimal Dissanayake literally wrote the book on this subject. Asia has an insatiable appetite for producing and consuming film. You'll be amazed at the things you'll learn about Asian cinema, from one of the best internationally recognized scholar in the field.

CERTIFICATION WORKSHOPS FOR ACM 310 and ACM 455 - If you're enrolled - or planning to - in Cinematic Narrative Production or Indigenous Filmmaking, remember that you have to complete a certification workshop (or receive a waiver from the instructor) in camera and editing fundamentals. The first workshop will be Saturday - August 19 - from 9 am to 4 pm. It's put on by Pacific New Media and will meet on campus in Krauss 012 for the morning session. Registration is through Outreach College and the cost for the workshop is $100. See: www.outreach.hawaii.edu/pnm/programs/2006/EVENT-L08433.asp.

GAME DESIGNER, DIGITAL ARTIST EDDO STERN

Electronic Media Artist and former game programmer Eddo Stern will be on campus Sept. 12-15 for the Intersections Program, co-sponsored by ACM. Stern, whose work powerfully comments on technology and media culture, will give a public lecture at 7:30 pm Sept. 12 in the Art Auditorium. Stern's interests span new narrative and documentary modes and cross-cultural/cross-media representations in film, computer games and on the Internet. He'll be invited to drop in on selected ACM classes as well. An exhibition of his works, DARK MACHINIMA, will be held at KCC's Koa Gallery from Sept. 13-Oct. 6.

HELP WANTED

A television ballroom dance competition is looking for camera operators. Dates are Sept. 21-23, at the Sheraton Waikiki. A stipend of $400 for all three days is available, and lunch is provided. Interested? Contact Adam Burnett at adam.burnett@vacationclub.com.

GIRL FeST

The GiRL FeST International Film Festival, at The Honolulu Academy of Arts. Girl Fest Hawaii unites organizations and filmmakers around the world to focus on, and to provide a platform for, films made by or for women. Among the many great films this year are: "Beyond Beats and Rhymes," a documentary by Byron Hurt about misogyny in Hip-Hop culture; "Barang" an eye-opening account of a handful of college students in Cambodia; and "Awake Zion" which draws the link between Orthodox Judaism and Rastafarianism. September 14th to September 17th at the Doris Duke Theater.

Prof. Anne Misawa and student filmmaker Jason Ordenstein, who spoke on local filmmaking. Jason's WAITING TO SURFACE was also screened. Plastic Leis", an advance production short, directed by Ty Sanga, won the Best Hawaiian Short

WASSUP, ROCKERS?

Your last chance to see Larry Clark's latest unyielding gaze at contemporary teen culture. From the director of hard-hitting KIDS and BULLY, Clark hits the streets of South Central Los Angeles. WASSUP ROCKERS is based on the real life experiences of a group of Latino teenagers who make their way into the heart of Beverly Hills, where they attract local rich girls and plenty of trouble with the police, jealous boyfriends and nervous parents. Tuesday through Thursday at 1 pm and 7:30 pm at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Coming to the Doris Duke, the very powerful THE PROPOSITION, Australian director John Hillcoat's Outback Western written by Nick Cave (yes, that one) and starring Guy Pearce. Aug. 25-31, various times.
