PASSIVE VOICE TAKES OLELO AWARD

Congratulations to Ty Sanga as his short, PASSIVE VOICE, won the Expert Category at the 2006 Olelo Youth XChange Video Competition. Ty will be leaving for the Atlanta Film Festival, June 9-17 where his Hawai‘i   International Film Festival entry PLASTIC LEIS will be screened.

STUDY DOCUMENTARY, EARN 1 CREDIT

ACM students can earn 1 credit of ACM 390, Workshop in Creative Media, by enrolling for DIRECTING THE DOCUMENTARY, a Pacific New Media class to be held Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, from 9 am to 4 pm each day in Sakamaki C103. Documentary filmmaker Sam Green will lead the workshop, which consists of a lively combination of lecture and discussion with screenings of clips from the instructor's films and other documentaries as illustration. Special emphasis is placed on researching a project, fundraising, conducting interviews, working with archival footage, and successful strategies for bringing a project to fruition. The workshop fee is $200. Enroll through Outreach College (Register for LO8495).

Sam Green's most recent feature-length film, THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND, tells the story of a group of radical young women and men who tried to violently overthrow the US government during the late 1960s and ‘70s. There will be a free screening May 26 at 7 pm in the Yukioshi Room, Krauss 012.

May 5 is the deadline to apply for a Hawaiian Association of Broadcasters Scholarship in the organization's open competition. Applications can be downloaded from <www.hawaiibroadcasters.com>.

LEARN THE TRICKS OF DIGITAL PAINTING

Join Craig Mullins for a demonstration of the tools used for Digital Concept Art and Matte Painting in a free lecture and workshop, “Painting with Pixels” May 5 from 2-4 pm at Kapiolani Community College's Ohia 118.   Mullins is one of the foremost digital painters for feature film and the gaming industry. Sunday at 5 pm in Spaulding Auditorium: SHAMAN OF THE ANDES, shot in the mountain communities of northern Ecuador, this film explores the fascinating world of the shaman of the Quechua Indians, and examines how this indigenous culture contends with the modern world. EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS: HOW THE SEX-DRUGS-AND-ROCK ‘N' ROLL GENERATION SAVED HOLLYWOOD. Worth it just for the title alone, this documentary, based on the book by Peter Biskind, chronicles edgy, impressionistic pictures made by maverick, now-legendary directors such as Scorsese, Coppola, Lucas, Altman, Polanski and Peckinpah.
