Tom Brislin joined the staff of the Academy in 2004 from the university's School of Communications, where he served as founding chair, bringing together the Departments of Journalism and Communication.
Dr. Brislin chaired the successful movement in 2001-2002 to establish the academic, creative and community foundations for a university-wide film school. That effort led to the launching of the Academy for Creative Media.
Dr. Brislin earned his B.A. in English at the University of Guam, His M.A. and Ph.D. studies focused on Mass Communication at The Ohio State University. The bulk of his doctorate was spent in the OSU Department of Photography and Cinema, since renamed Media Arts.
Dr. Brislin had an extensive career as a newspaper and broadcast journalist in Hawaii and Guam, and since rejoining the university enjoys a reputation as an international scholar in media ethics.
He has directed international mass media programs and projects with journalists and scholars from the People's Republic of China, Germany, Korea and Japan. He sits on the international advisory board of the East-West Center's Media Program and on the editorial board of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. He administers the nationally renowned Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism Ethics Programs, which funds student prizes and campus visits by prominent scholars and practitioners in media ethics.
Dr. Brislin assists in the academic advising and administration of the Academy, and teaches courses in the Critical Studies track, including Media Ethics.
